RUFFARCHITECTS has submitted planning for the redevelopment of 34-42 East Street, Barking, as part of the town centre masterplan objectives on the site of the former Capitol Cinema and M&S site. The project, a major mixed-use development in east London for a private developer, will deliver 65 new one, two and three bedroom homes across a collection of four to eight storey buildings and help rejuvenate the surrounding area with new ground floor activation.
Adjacent to the recently renovated former Magistrate Court, the island site has two key frontages to the historic high street and the Town Square, which forms the heart of the Abbey and Barking Town Conservation Area. The proposal will replace the existing low-quality single and two storey retail units comprising of an Iceland and discount store, with a new high-quality design that will better contribute to the to the town centre with active frontages to all sides.
RUFFARCHITECTS will build on the regeneration work previously undertaken in 2010, providing the final piece to complete this area and help link the prosperous East Street with the Town Square and Barking Central development.
